What is a virtual assistant?

A virtual assistant (VA) is a contractor who provides administrative services to a business or individual. Most often a VA provides services offsite, usually via the internet. In most cases, a virtual assistant works on a project to project basis.

It is also possible for a company to hire a VA on a retainer basis, purchasing a package of hours to be used over a certain period of time. Retainer packages usually offer a discounted rate and some assurance that your virtual assistant will be available to complete your tasks in a timely manner.

Is my virtual assistant an employee of my company?

No. In most cases, a virtual assistant is used on a contract basis. You are paying a service provider, not hiring an employee. Therefore, you are not responsible for all of the typical issues that come along with an employee (taxes, insurance, sick pay and other benefits)..

Can I hire different virtual assistants to handle different projects or tasks?

Most definitely. It is solely your discretion as to whom you choose to provide services for you and what services you outsource to them. Like most industries, there are virtual assistants who specialize in certain areas and not others. Most VA's do not insist on exclusivity.
